Mindfulness is the state of acknowledging and accepting whatever is happening in the present moment exactly as it is without judgment or attachment. The practice of mindfulness is the cultivation of a more cooperative and compassionate relationship between you and your mind. Mindfulness can help increase our presence with others, ourselves, and our environment. It facilitates greater compassion and empathy, improves self-care and stress management, and can expand our perspective and understanding of complex relationships, systems, and conflicts.

DBT was originally developed from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and the general goal is to learn and develop healthy coping skills to change problematic behavioral, emotional, and thinking patterns that impact our daily life. The term "dialectical" refers to the integration or acknowledgment of opposites. DBT emphasizes the importance of holding seemingly conflicting opposites, acceptance and change.
People who can benefit from DBT skills training often struggle with knowing how they feel or identifying goals, acting without thinking through the consequences, either quick intense changing emotions or overly controlled suppressed emotions, and difficulty managing conflicts and getting their needs met. DBT aims to strengthen the following areas:
Mindfulness – the practice of being aware and present in the moment
Distress Tolerance – how to tolerate emotional pain in difficult situations
Emotion Regulation – how to shift or change emotions or increase positive emotions
Interpersonal Effectiveness – how to get your needs met or saying no while maintaining self-respect and relationships

EMDR is a structured therapy that involves a client to focus briefly on a trauma or distressing memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation which often is created through alternating eye movements. This stimulation reduces the intensity and distress associated with the memory (desensitization) and facilitates healing and positive coping through reprocessing the emotions and meanings associated with the memories. EMDR requires less talking and focuses on helping the brain to resume its natural healing process.
